At the Looney Days Festival today, there was a loon calling contest for all ages.
The first little guy was 8 months old. He didn't coo into the microphone like he was supposed to. His father squeezed his middle like a toy, and that didn't help. No sound came out.
A little girl with pink and purple painted hair, skipped up the stairs, sang "Wooooo Wooooo Woooooo.....with a high pitch warble, and took two bows.
"This is how my grandfather calls," said another little girl, "Here loon! Here loon!"
She cupped her hands and a call came out so real it sounded like a flock of loons had just flown over.
There was a sad loon call.
And other calls from folks from places like long prairie and texas, teenagers in cowboy hats. Big sisters cheering in the audience.
The last contestant, who was 68, got in the last word-call..."There's no loon like and old loon." (Loons live to be 15 to 30 years old.) The end.
